Allow roughly 1kW of capacity per 10m² of floor space in a well-insulated room. Ceiling height, window area and sun exposure all shift that number, so use it as a sanity check rather than a specification. A proper assessment comes with every quote.

For one or two rooms, a split system is cheaper to install and cheaper to run. For whole-home comfort, a zoned ducted system is the better long-term investment and generally adds more to property value. The break-even point sits around three to four rooms.

Once a year, before the season you use it most. Twice yearly if you run it for both heating and cooling. A proper service covers coil cleaning, drain clearing, refrigerant pressure checks, electrical connections and filters.

A reverse-cycle system is the cheapest electric heating available because it moves existing heat rather than generating it. Set it to 18–20°C in winter and 24–26°C in summer. Every degree beyond those ranges adds roughly 5 to 10 per cent to your running costs.

A quality split system, properly maintained, gives you twelve to fifteen years. Ducted systems often exceed that. Annual servicing is the biggest single factor in lifespan.

If the repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new system and the unit is over ten years old, replacement usually makes better financial sense. We’ll give you the honest answer either way, and we won’t recommend replacing a system with good years left in it.
